Last year, the
local residents voted Top Ten Recreational Streets in Shanghai
from 20 candidate streets. These most popular streets reflect
the city's historical change, featuring both modern and
traditional architecture, stunning views and top malls.
1. Xintiandi
(Luwan District)
Featuring Shanghai's
unique shikumen architecture, the symbol of the city in
the 20th century, the former residential blocks have been
converted to multifunctional dining, retail, and entertainment
centers.
2. Nanjing Road
Pedestrian Mall (Huangpu District)
It is "China's
No.1 Business Street", one of the "must visit"
shopping centers for tourists, often crowded on weekends
and holidays. It is famous for the Wing On, Shanghai No.1
Department Store and Shanghai No.1 Food Store.
3. Riverside
Avenue (Pudong New Area)
Lying along the
east bank of the Huangpu River, it is a great place to relax
and enjoy a cup of coffee in the big-name eateries, watching
the ships sailing up and down the river, and appreciate
the architecture on the other side.
4. Duolun Road
(Hongkou District)
Although narrow
and short, the street is famous for the villas where Chinese
historical and cultural figures lived, including Lu Xun,
Mao Dun, and Ding Ling. It now has many shops selling antiques,
ceramics, and traditional Chinese paintings and calligraphy.
5. Hengshan Road
(Xuhui District)
Flanked by phoenix
trees, this quiet road in daytime turns into a bustling
spot at night, thanks to the numerous bars and restaurants
offering worldwide cuisines. The diversity has led to a
more sophisticated lifestyle among the city's youth.
6. Meichuan Road
(Putuo District)
A new shopping
center and green space, located in the city's northwest,
covers 50,000 square meters, featuring teahouses, restaurants,
and boutiques.
7. Zhongshan
Road East 1 (Huangpu District)
Better known
as "the Bund", the waterfront is regarded as one
of the symbols of Shanghai and renowned for 52 buildings
of different architectural styles, including Gothic, Baroque,
Classic, and Renaissance.
8. Fangbang Road
Middle (Huangpu District)
The road (also
known as "Shanghai Old Street"), near the Yuyuan
Garden, was a busy street in the early 20th century with
private banks, jewelry shops, and teahouses. And it is now
a tourist attraction because of its architecture from the
Ming and Qing dynasties selling handicrafts.
9. Qibao Old
Street (Minhang District)
Located in Qibao
Ancient Town, this street features the traditional style
of a small town from hundreds of years ago. Visitors can
tour museums showing artifacts, draws and photos of daily
life.
10. North Street
(Qingpu District)
One of the best-preserved
ancient streets in Shanghai, this main street dominates
a town (Zhujiajiao) with a history of over 1,700 years.
It is a good place to appreciate long-established businesses
and old bridges.
