The most popular
visitor activity in Pudong is to stroll along the Riverside
Avenue. Known as Shanghai's East Bund, the promenade lies
along the eastern bank of the Huangpu River and faces the
Bund to its west. It is two-and-a-half kilometers long,
and covers an area of 150,000 square meters, consisting
of touching-water platforms, sloping green land, sightseeing
routes and Riverside Garden. It is a great place to sit
back, enjoy a cup of coffee, listen to music, watch the
ships sailing up and down the river and look across to the
colonial buildings of the Bund.
It is not only
a nice place to visit, but also a booming commercial center.
The prime location has attracted many famous restaurants,
cafes and coffee houses. Starbucks was the first cafe to
open a branch in the area in 2001 so that many people can
enjoy sitting beside the river and chatting with their friends
for a whole afternoon. The Paulaner branch allows customers
to have dinner outside under a big red umbrella, while enjoying
a view of skyscrapers and having easy listening. A Haagen-Dazs
outlet looks like a boat floating on the river. It sits
on a wooden platform over the water and has room for more
than 200 people.
The northern
section of the avenue is home to many restaurants and large
areas of grassland. Real Brewed Tea stands beside the main
square, which is filled with plants and a lawn. The teahouse
is popular with youngsters, both from home and abroad.
There are many
great events held in the area. Giorgio Armani held a fashion
show that attracted more than 1,000 visitors. When a Formula
One boat racing was staged on the Huangpu River, more than
30,000 spectators watched the event from both banks of the
river. The World Female Handball Championship Tournament
was also held with a transparent glass court brought to
the city from Hong Kong.
The avenue, together
with many high-rise buildings, the Central Green, the Century
Avenue and the modern urban landscape make Lujiazui a well-known
wedding palace.
